Laboratory Preparation for MCC’s Upcoming Electro-Optics Program Project Site: Maui Community College Mentor: Mark Hoffman

Project Abstract: Maui Community College (MCC) is creating an electro-optics program. The purpose of this internship project is to prepare MCC to remotely use telescope facilities. In order to do this, I needed to configure and prepare two workstations to enable remote access to three telescopes: a Celestron telescope here at MCC, a Celestron telescope at Haleakala, and the Faulkes Telescope. Having these workstations will encourage teachers and students to engage in research-based education. A Pugh chart was used to evaluate what type of workstation will be most suitable in regards to the total cost of the system. After the evaluation of the workstation, the next problem was that the lab was out of IP addresses. To address this, I ordered, documented, and configured a router capable of Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP). This router was then configured as a private dynamic Network Address Translation (NAT) system to eliminate any current and upcoming network issues. However, remote access would not be available to private addresses. To solve this issue, I created a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that removes the isolation of private addresses to public addresses. Overall detailed outcomes of this project will be discussed.
